Times Square • New York City

On August 14, 2010, members of AWON, along with WWII veterans, gathered in Times Square to celebrate the passage of a Concurrent Resolution designating the Second Sunday of August as the "Spirit of '45 Day" to commemorate the anniversary of the end of WWII on August 14, 1945.

AWON was mentioned in remarks made by Ryan Hegg, Program Director, Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive and AWON members were invited to come up to the stage, holding photos of their Fathers while Ryan continued his remarks. AWON president, Ed Peters, spoke a few words to the crowd.  The AWONers were well received and it was an emotional experience for all of them.

Ryan's remarks were concluded with one of the USO singers singing the AWON anthem, "I'll Be Seeing You".  Needless to say, there were many tears shed, even the young lady who sang was visibly overcome. It was a wonderful experience to be able to honor all of our Father's on such a worldwide stage. Most of the AWON attendees met afterward for lunch and  many had also met for dinner Friday evening. It was a wonderful weekend, spending time with AWON members and honoring our Fathers and other WWII Veterans.
