Spirit of '45 Event

This day of remembrance for the end of World War II was celebrated all over the country.

Bob Filner, California congressman and author of the resolution which ultimately made Spirit of ’45 Day a reality, spoke of the day’s significance. Hugh O’Brian, several veterans, Roger Connor of AWON, and representatives from government at the city, county and state level also spoke briefly.

Most of the program was held at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park. The final event of the day was at the statue Unconditional Surrender on the embarcadero with the USS Midway across a narrow channel and the new memorial to Bob Hope a few steps away. Taps was beautifully played by Clayton Becker at 7:00 p.m., completing its roll across our beloved USA. Spirit of ’45 Day is now a reality thanks to the hard work of too many people to list.

passed away in June. She worked tirelessly on the campaign right up to the time of her passing.
