Memorial Day 2010 at Henri-Chapelle

On Friday, the day before the regular Memorial Day services,
Belgian TV covered some of the special, AWON-related Henri-Chapelle stories – Click Here!
Be patient, as the Henri-Chapelle story is a couple of minutes into the coverage.

Visitors arrive on a beautiful Spring Friday in Belgium,
the day before the services.

A few of the 7,992 markers – all prepared with both the Belgian and American Flags.

Sisters Helen Heath Lawson and Nancy Heath Vernon share a quiet moment
to remember their Father, PFC Elmer Baker Heath.

The TV crew interviews Jim Burtnett, son of SGT Francis E. Burtnett,
as AWON "Ambassador" Régine Achten translates. Régine and her husband, Bernard
have adopted the graves of several men at Henri-Chapelle, and founded the wreath
and banner remembrance for AWON in 2003 -- a program that now includes
all 16 overseas cemeteries that hold WWII dead.

AWONer Diane Pollard is interviewed . . .

. . . remembering her Father, CPT James Howard Hardy.

AWONer Diane Richardson is interviewed . . .

. . . remembering her Father, PVT Frederick Roy Rodahl.

We're all so heartened that the children are involved, as they quickly learn the human cost of freedom.
