"I am the nephew Lt. Commander Fort Hammond Callahan, USN, now deceased. I have some of his reminisces but nothing in writing. I do know he sent one of the last messages from Corregidor along with Lt. Melvyn H. McCoy. Commander McCoy was sent to Cabanatuan and later to Mindanao where he escaped (see Ten Escaped From Tojo).
My uncle was sent to Japan apparently six months after the surrender having been held on the Rock to run the air-conditioning. Actually, he read and spoke Japanese and was part of the naval crypto unit. I understand he was sent to Osaka but refused to broadcast and was then sent to another camp for "correction" of his attitude. He was finally sent to Northern Hokkaido where he was rescued. I would like information from anyone, particularly about a Sergeant Watonabi.
I am now retired and can devote some time to his memory. I do have his hat from prison camp and his bell clock from Annapolis but not much else. I do have a pictorial history of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines with pictures and maps but the subtitles are all in Japanese.
I would like to correspond with anyone interested in the above."
