"Bataan Diary-1940-1945"
by James L. Rand, died Oct. 24 1999

This is the personal account by a soldier from enlistment at Ft. Leavenworth to pre-war Manila, through the battle of the Philippines, to surrender on Bataan, imprisonment at Cabanatuan and Hirohata, Japan and to liberation.

His story is told with actual excerpts from his diary, interspersed with personal interviews and official accounts from Army and Marine Corps records.   In addition to the personal accounts by James Rand, this book contains first hand accounts of the War in the Pacific, recorded by his two brothers: Willard Rand (Lt. Col. USMC ) and Paul Rand (C.P.O. USN, Ret'd).

The story my Dad always told was that the photograph of his Mother that was pasted on the inside cover of the diary, kept it from being confiscated by the Japanese.   Although the diary was designed for only one year, it sufficed for five.   Dad was known in the camp as James L. "Sally" Rand.

NOTE:  The Rand family has distributed all copies of this book that were printed, so it is no longer available from them.  Persons wanting to obtain a copy of this book should look for a used book from Amazon.com, BookFinder.com or another source.
