John Taylor Ward's Biographical Sketch
(Submitted by Grandson, John Taylor Ward, III)

My grandfather was born in Robeline, Louisiana on 1 Jan 1900 and raised in Como, Mississippi.   He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1920.   He had been stationed at Ft. Riley Kansas as a Lt. Col. in the Cavalry.   His nickname throughout his life was "Tubby" although he was far from being obese.   He was a championship polo player.

At Gen. MacArthur's request, he left Ft. Riley with a detail from the QM Corps. to establish a supply depot at Guagua, Philippines.   From Ft. Riley he traveled to Ft. Baker, California and from there to Camp Callan, California from which he deployed to the Philippines in November 1941.   He had previously been stationed in the Philippines in 1929-30 at Ft. Stotsenburg.

He was wounded on Corregidor and may have been captured there.   While on Corregidor, he was treated by a nurse named Juanita Redmond.   He was fatally bayonetted on the Death March.   I am not sure if his remains were ever found, but his name is on the memorial near Manila.   His son, my father, is still alive and is also interested in learning any more details about his father's final days and is compiling more information which I can pass on to you, to be shared on this website.

Thanks,
John Taylor Ward III
