Russell Walker's Biographical Sketch


    Russell Walker (1917 - 1950) was born in Iowa.
    Went to the Missouri Military Academy in Mexico, Missouri.
    Enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 1936.
    Was in the 84th Field Artillery, Fort Riley, Kansas.
    Sent overseas to the Philippines in 1939.
    Stationed at Company E, 31st Infantry in Manila.
    Transferred to the Finance Detachment, Finance Office, U.S. Army in Manila.
    Colonel John R. Vance was principal disbursing officer at the outbreak of WWII.


    Russell married Florence Huffmaster December 7, 1941.   Rev. Albert D. Talbot, Chaplain AUS officiated.   The Finance Office was transferred from the Port Area to Corregidor, Malinta Tunnel, Lateral 12.   Russell was taken prisoner of war when Corregidor surrendered April 1942.

    After Bilibid, Russell was taken to Honshu, Japan in December 1942.   He was in POW camps in Osaka, Zentsugi, Kobe docks, and Tsuruga.   Russell was liberated in September 1945.   Reunited with his wife, Florence, and arrived in the U.S. October 1945.   They were stationed at the Finance Office, Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, Colorado;   FO, Army Medical Center (Walter Reed General Hospital) in Washington, D.C.;   FO, 2nd Army Headquarters, Fort George Meade, Maryland;   FO, Army Chemical Center, Edgewood, Maryland.

    Died at Walter Reed General Hospital May 2, 1950   (death caused by a disease aggravated as a POW).   Buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.   Russell and Florence had three children: Paul (in 1946), John (in 1948), and Mary (in 1950).
