Dear Granddad,

Your bravery during World War II places us all forever in your debt.    The courage you displayed in situations of extreme chaos and adversity has often been revered by your fellow Patriots.    The true depth of your honor and courage was unveiled while you spent 3 grueling years as a Prisoner of War in Japan (after the surrender of Corregidor and Bataan).

I never knew you as a soldier.    In you, I only saw a loving Grandfather who was always caring and proud.    You skillfully forced the past behind you, and never allowed dire memories to influence your character.    Instead, you became a loving family man who deeply adored his devoted wife, daughter and grandchildren.

If I am ever called upon to defend this great nation, I pray that I am able to act as bravely and as honorably as you have.    You leave me with enormous shoes to fill and a proud tradition of excellence to up-hold.    I will look to you when I need strength and determination.     To me, you are a HERO!

I will cherish your memory always,

Joel
