Howard Morgan Obituary

    Howard E. Morgan, of Windy Hill, Gloucester, VA., passed away on Wednesday June 23rd, 1999 after a long battle with cancer.

    He was born in Georgetown, Illinois, on August 11th, 1920 to Opal Barr Morgan and James Harvey Morgan.   He graduated from Georgetown High School in 1938 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September 1939.   He was sent to the Philippines in November 1940.   At the fall of the Philippines in April 1942 he was one of the thousands of American troops surrendered to Japan.   He survived the Bataan Death March and was held prisoner by the Japanese for the next 3 years in the Prison Camps; O’Donnell, Cabanatuan, and Bilibid.   After the war ended, he was released and he returned to his hometown.

    There he met and married Hazel Ann (Sue) Morgan (daughter of Ann and Paul Morgan, no relation to Howard).   He continued what would be a 22 year military career, having assignments in both the U.S. and Great Britain, ending at Langely Air Force Base, Hampton, VA.

    In July of 1961 he retired from the Air Force but continued working at the same desk, as a civilian in the TAC Budget Office at Langley for the next 18 years.   He received numerous honors and awards for his civilian service as well as for his military career.   He retired in 1979 after providing 40 years of dedicated service to his country.

    The Morgans resided in Hampton, VA until 1975 when they moved to Hayes, VA where they lived on and worked a small farm.   In 1985 they moved to a new home that they designed and built.   Mr. Morgan was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

    Mr. Morgan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sue Morgan.   Daughter Susan and her husband David Cooper, live in Sumter, SC.   Along with a granddaughter Andrea Cooper.   Son Tim, resides at home with his Mother at Windy Hill, Gloucester, VA.   Grandson Craig Cooper resides in Hampton, VA.   He has 2 children; Angelique and A.J.    Mr. Morgan’s Sister Naomi, resides in Texas with her husband Dave Collins.   Four nieces and four nephews reside in VA, IL, and TX.

    Visitation will be held at Andrews Funeral Home, Rt.14, Gloucester on Sunday, June 26th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.   A memorial service, also at Andrews will be held Monday June 27th at 7:00 p.m.   Burial with full military honors will take place at the family cemetery at Pleasant Mound, Georgetown, IL.
