On Monday evening 19 October 2009, Steve Walsh, suffered a stroke at his home in Washington, DC. Earlier this morning, with his family at the hospital, Steve was taken off life support and died at 1045 EST. As many of you know Steve was very active in the Catholic church. His brother has communicated that Steve led a very full life and was very fulfilled up until the end. Steve volunteered as a court appointed special advocate for abused children, was a member of the Republican National Committee, and a die hard NY Jets fan, attending several games this season already with his family. He will be laid to rest in New York with his mother who passed away a few years ago. Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming from the family in the next 24-36 hours and the services will be held in NY.
Steve, affectionately known as "Sugar Boy", will be missed greatly.
From our 1987 Howizter, "The word that sums up Sugar Boy is Brooklyn."
Please keep his family in your prayers during this difficult time.
With much sadness,
Donna

All,
Kevin Stringer's paper "Educating the Strategic Corporal: A Paradigm Shift", recently published in Military Review, was this year's winner in the 2009 Gen. William DePuy Combined Arms Center Writing Competition. This year's competition was focused on the topic of "Leadership Development from Initial Entry Training to the Battlefield."
Congratulations Kevin.

Amigas y Amigos,
I know you have been holding your breath since Friday so I will cut to the chase. We received a total of 262 votes (I even added some of the stragglers) and here are the results:
1. Combating Terrorism Center (CTC) - 120
2. Cadet Chapel Organ (CCO) - 68
3. Center for Oral History - 74
As you can see we have a CLEAR winner. I have couple of more pleas before I get started on the fund raising effort. First, if you have not joined www.buglenotes.com please do so. We hope to move a lot of this chatter over there so you are not getting bombarded with emails. It is a great place to network with fellow grads. Second, please donate to the class gift. Here is my opinion : It's not really so much about the gift as it is about the class, our mutual experiences and our life-long bond. Thanks again for bearing with me and be sure you will be hearing from me again!

More than 20 years ago, we lost one of our classmates, Matthew Zielinski. His spirit and memory still remains strong in many of us today. We have just recently learned that a construction project taking place at Ft Sill, OK has been approved (due mainly to the efforts of LTC Dan Karbler). Apparently, there is ongoing construction of an ADA brigade complex where the Memorial Circle will be named and dedicated in Matthew Zielinski's name.
Paul Britton and I have volunteered to act as the points of contact for all friends who may want to attend / donate money (goal of $5,000) toward the project (as Dan Karbler has just recently been deployed again). The dedication ceremony will take place Friday, April 23, 2010 in Ft Sill. We don't know a lot of the details yet, but are working towards finalizing them.
Many of our classmates have already shown an interest in attending, so we would like to see how many of you would be interested in holding a mini reunion / celebration in Matt's honor at/near Fort Sill in April 2010.
Please let Paul and I know if you can attend so we can determine how large of a venue to plan for. Also, if you are interested in making any donations, please let us know. As we mentioned, the details are a bit foggy at this point, but as we get closer, we will keep everyone in the loop.
Thanks
Erik Everton

West Point Community,
I’ve not posted any correspondence through this e mail service. Mostly because I want to respect the time and consideration it takes to weed through the many e mails that we must go through on a daily basis and I do not want to waste your time. So I would only do so for a matter that I considered most important for your view. I feel that this is such a case.
