We had a little over 100 folks vote in the poll and in the end we had about 70% in favor of some discussion and 30% not in favor of discussions. Seems clear many of us want to loosen things up while a significant number of us do not. Since this mailing list is a class communications tool we use for official class business, we cannot be a pure democracy on this so some restrictions are necessary. We cannot really afford to lose people to discussions when we have a list specifically set up for discussions but since our feelings along these lines are not as strong as they once were I think we can try to loosen up the rules a bit. Allow some discussions without the repeat of the great Amway debate of several years ago. Here's what I propose we try for a while. If we start to lose people due to discussions, we can always roll back to the stricter rules. The mailing list is open to limited discussion. Consider your reply and if it is not something you think is of interest to the much of the class, make the reply personal. If you think it is of interest to much of the class, send it to the class. Limited is a flexible standard, congratulations to personal announcements may be stopped after two or three responses while discussions of class business like reunion information or the class gift may be allowed to continue for several messages. If you ever think the conversation has gone on long enough but still want to continue it, simply take it to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it where it can continue as long as people want to talk about it. Please keep discussions limited to topics that are class mailing list topics. These are:
For those of you who are afraid that these changes may overwhelm your inbox, remember that we have a digest version that combines messages into a single email. The digest version comes out when we have reached 1,000,000 characters or once a week, which ever comes first. I do not recall any complaints about the number of messages from the people who have switched to this version of the mailing list. Just let me know if you would like to try this version. Let's give this a try. If you think there is too much traffic, let me know. If I sense the discussions will hurt the class use of the list to get information out, we will go back to the no discussions rules. In a few months I will post another survey to see how the class feels the changes are going if we have not already gone back to the old rules. -- Mike Lyman |
