Dear Members of WP-ORG,
It has been an interesting time since our last fund drive, but one in which WP-ORG has shown its value to all who use it. As you all know, WP-ORG has been around for over a decade, providing services to more than 30,000 graduates, cadet activities, parents, and friends of West Point. These services are free to all, provided by a volunteer staff and three paid employees on a shoestring budget that is renewed every six months in voluntary contributions from its generous members; in short, if we don't provide what our members need, they won't donate, and we will be out of business. Hence, the need for another fund drive. We neither possess nor solicit multi-million dollar endowment funds.
Since the last fund drive, however, I think that WP-ORG has shown its value to all. We are completely independent of all outside groups; we are not the West Point Association of Graduates (whose name, coincidentally, changed to WPAOG, and has caused confusion when we get emails relating to what the AOG does, and I am sure, it gets some for us); and we are not the Academy, so we can speak freely within the terms of service users agree to when joining.
WP-ORG took the lead in providing information on the recent Academy attempts to protect the Academy's trademarks, including posting information and letters from the Superintendent even before the Academy or the AOG posted the information on their web sites. WP-ORG members have submitted Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain information that the public and WP-ORG members, have a right to know, but had not been made available by the Academy. As a result, in at least one instance (ownership of the Bicentennial Crest trademark), the Academy has had to take remedial action to transfer the registration to the proper owner. Also, the Academy has provided cost-free licenses to parents' clubs, societies, and others to use some Academy trademarks. Certainly, WP-ORG did not cause these actions, and while we work closely with USMA and the AOG, WP-ORG's provision of information to its members kept the members informed in a manner that has not been seen before.
In addition, WP-ORG continued to provide email, forum discussion, memorial, and myriad other services to its users on a daily basis, with few, if any, interruptions. It is here - the connection of USMA graduates, parents, friends, and family members - that I believe WP-ORG provides the most valuable services. My class held its 25th reunion this past September, yet I feel as if I am in daily contact with many of my classmates on the West-Point Forum, and can visit the class page that WP-ORG hosts to remain up-to-date on the rest. Using WP-ORG email, I can communicate with my classmates on issues of importance, or simply chat about the mundane. I visit my fallen classmates' eulogy pages on a routine basis to read the latest posts. With WP-ORG, I can be an active member of my class even a quarter century after we graduated.
All of these services are free, but like freedom itself, many volunteer to pay the price. The price, in the case of WP-ORG, is a charitable, tax-deductible gift of any amount towards the proposed $107,937 budget, available at http://www.west-point.org/budget/ How much is enough? Whatever you care to donate; whatever you think our services are worth to you. As the "Why Donate" (http://www.west-point.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=66&Itemid=73 ) page states, "WP-ORG is a labor of love of your classmates and friends." You determine the value of their labor as it relates to you.

Published: July 29, 2008 WASHINGTON — Caleb Campbell, a member of West Point’s class of 2008 and a seventh-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions,
woke up one day last week expecting to sign a $295,000 contract that
afternoon. He was anticipating the team’s season opener in September
against the Atlanta Falcons. Campbell still expects to be on the sideline this September, but it will not be as an N.F.L.
player. Instead, he has been ordered to return to West Point as a
second lieutenant assigned to assistant coaching duties for Army. |

West Point, through OSJA has started cracking down on the use of
trademark images, sending threatening cease and desist letters to graduates and
parent clubs across the country, even for websites that clearly support
West Point, Cadets, and/or our deceased graduates. The USMA trademark

LTC Arnold Tucker, USMA 1947, and former UM and Army star, was recently inducted to the
College Football Hall of Fame. He played at Miami High and was a legend
there. He won the Sullivan Award as the nation's best amateur athlete

Volunteers participate in drills — and have instructors bark at them

form for reception day, or "R-Day," for the Class of 2012. At mock
R-Day on June 27, he practiced the finer points of leaning close to

Effective immediately, by order of the Superintendent, the words to the West Point Alma Mater, and "The Corps" have been changed to make them gender inclusive.2 June, 2008 Fellow members of the Long Gray Line,
I’m
writing to let you know that I have in fact decided to update the
lyrics to our Alma Mater and The Corps. The realization that these
songs explicitly exclude our women graduates–two of whom have given
their lives in battle–was the driving force behind the changes, and
it's simply the right thing to do. I have received unanimous support
for this decision from the Board of Visitors and the Executive Steering
Group, whose members are the Secretary of the Army, the Army Chief of
Staff, and the Army Vice Chief of Staff.
