In case you read the Army Headline News about Cadet Matt Bell receiving the Roosma Award for basketball, that was me up there on stage presenting it. My family established the award after my grandfather (John S. Roosma, '26) passed away in Nov 1983. He was admitted to the basketball Hall of Fame for being the first college player to score over 1000 points in his career. Too bad I didn't get his height ;-) Beat Navy! Meg Roosma |

Afghanis celebrate their independence from Soviet occupation on April 28th. The Afghan National Army commemorates the day with a military parade, attended by President Karzai and a who’s who of Afghan and foreign dignitaries. The parade is a throw back to Communist era spectacles, designed as a show of strength for potential adversaries. Based on the amount of time dedicated to parade rehearsals, the Afghans believe there is much political capital to be gained by flawless marching. With an ongoing insurgency, I wonder if “the parade juice was worth the squeeze.” Clearly, I have much to learn about Afghan politics. Nevertheless, the cadets looked great at the parade.

Sibylla (Meine) Andrean provided the following note (and picture) about her and her brother, CJ:
Hi Val, All is well here. I retired on 1 Sept 05. I am teaching a class online for Troy University. I am currently living in Tucson, Arizona. My husband Clark is in the Air Force and stationed at Davis Monthan AFB. He left on 1 May to go to Kuwait for about 5 months. He just came back last July from a 9 month deployment to Iraq :-(

Classmates,
Below you will find a link to the Class of '85 Eulogy page, which provides a repository for our collective memories of those classmates who are no longer with us.
Many of us formed very close friendships while at West Point only to find that the pace of daily life changed our priorities and made it difficult to stay in touch. We can start reforming connections now by recording the stories of our past.
Please contribute to the eulogy page and help us record the stories of our classmates who are no longer able to tell their own. The memories you provide will be a valuable contribution to our class web site and a testament to the spirit of our class.
For Excellence We Strive, '85

Nine USMA alumni celebrated West Point Founder's Day on March 25th with the cadets, staff, and faculty of the National Military Academy of Afghanistan. Founder's Day is an annual event, celebrated wherever there are West Pointers, recognizing President Jefferson's signature that authorized the United States Military Academy on March 16, 1802. The celebration included speeches by the NMAA Commander and MG Bob Durbin ('75), a traditional Afghan lunch, and a memorial tree planting in honor of the four West Pointers who have died in Afghanistan. LTC Herman Asberry ('85) and I had the privilege of planting a tree with an Afghan cadet in honor of our classmate, LTC Mike McMahon. The "Kabul Chapter" celebration was another infusion of West Point's DNA into the young Afghan academy.

[See name tag in photo first] This is Rambo. His real name is Jamal Udin. A Taliban rocket killed his wife in 1996. A couple years ago Jamal showed up at the Camp Phoenix front gate with a big red pipe. He became a self-appointed security guard, screening vehicular and pedestrian traffic entering the American camp. After a while, GIs “adopted” him, outfitting him with the Army Combat Uniform and a nickname. On January 16th a suicide bomber rammed his vehicle into the front gate. While the bomber fumbled with the detonator, Rambo pulled him out through the broken windshield. Later, engineers blew the vehicle in place, destroying the guard post. Rambo saved the lives of several American Soldiers. A grateful nation thanks him! |
