David Pierson update
Written by Administrator
Friday, 09 May 2008
Tim:

Some news to share. You may decide whether to post it to the class website news page. I was recently named to the board of directors of two healthcare companies.

I am now serving on the board of MaxCyte, Inc., a medical device company in Gaithersburg, MD, which develops customized closed system electroporation devices to enable engineered cell therapy such as cell based immunotherapy for cancer or gene therapy. I was also named to the board of directors of Novamin Technologies in Gainesville, FL. Novamin is in the prescription and over-the-counter oral healthcare business and has a growing line of products selling internationally. I am currently a Partner with Intersouth Partners, a venture capital firm with >$800 million under management.

'85 in the News - Putting Soldiers Back Together

Here's an interesting story in the Middletown (NY) Times-Herald Record about Kenny MacDonald's recovery from a combat injury, with the assistance of surgeon Tom DeBarardino.

"Lt. Col. Kenny McDonald brews a pot of coffee and settles into his chair, looking squared away and slightly uncomfortable in his dining room at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He says he's feeling better. The physical therapy is going well. "My lung is at 85 percent capacity," he says, and the gash in his leg has closed.

McDonald got ripped apart in Iraq. He'll show you the scars. To rebuild him, Army medicine had to learn hard lessons from a hard war."

Scott Gemberling Update
Written by Scott Gemberling
Monday, 17 March 2008

I enjoy staying up-to-date on classmates in the Assembly.  Since I have not sent something in for many years, I decided to do it now.

My wife, Cindy, and I have two great teenagers - Tess (16) and Sean (15).  As parents, we have finally come to grips with the fact the kids do not want to take vacations with us anymore.  We just got back from a vacation in CA (Magic Mountain and Disneyland).  They would rather hang with their friends, especially since they both have a respective boyfriend and girlfriend.  We are planning for Tess to attend college soon.  She is the liberal artist (talented potter and painter) and plans on being a psychiatrist.  Sean is more interested in girls than school.

I am horse poor due to Cindy's equestrian hobby.  She has one horse she rides,  The second horse is out to pasture - literally.  I pay for him to graze peacefully on a farm.  I can only hope I am treated as well when I retire.

We finally made it back to Arizona seven years ago.  We are enjoying being around family and the nice weather.  Don't believe the dry heat explanation - 115 degrees is unbearable no matter the humidity.   Almost two years ago, I decided to leave the corporate world and bought a commercial construction business.  I am a general contractor doing mostly office renovations and some ground up construction.  I am once again applying all I learned in engineering classes at USMA.  It is a  great life.  I should have done my own thing sooner.

I golf whenever I can and brew and drink my own beer.  The Class of '85 has an open invitation to drink a cold one if you are ever in Phoenix.

That's my update.  God bless to all and I will continue to read about the rest of the class on the website and in Assembly.

The class of '58 started a mentorship program for Warriors that begins here at Walter Reed and then passes on to follow-on mentors once Warriors medically separate or retire from the service. The follow-on mentors are located throughout the country and pick-up helping these Veterans transition into their local communities and the VA system. This program has branched out to other West Point classes and the POC is Lee Miller at: \n This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it > This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

For anyone wishing to support our wounded Warriors. The Walter Reed Army Medical Center website outlines procedures for making donations to our Warriors and their Families:
http://www.wramc.amedd.army.mil/Support/Pages/default.aspx
Also for those in the DC local area, the website identifies volunteer opportunities.

I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the Army's effort to improve care for our wounded Warriors. Our classmates who are continuing to serve and lead in Iraq and Afghanistan deserve our best support as they fight everyday to protect our Soldiers as they accomplish a demanding mission.

Thanks for your support of our Warriors! -- Terry
