Happy New Year and here is a toast to Benny Havens for prosperity for all. I have a number of past and upcoming events to update you on.
Army – Navy 2011 in Washington, DC
We didn’t Beat Navy this year in Football, but we had some great celebrations. The weekend started off with Jill Maurer, Bonnie Schweppe, and the Class of 1983 ladies having a rocking party at the class hotel - The Embassy Suites in Olde Town Alexandria. There were rumors that security had to be called several times…but I don’t remember. Eighty-nine classmates and guests attended the remembrance dinner Friday night where we read the names of our deceased classmates. Finally, over 200 Classmates and guests attend the Pre-and Post-Tailgates in the Platinum Lot at the stadium. I’m sure I speak for everyone, Washington DC was a terrific venue. Thanks to Jill, Mike Olson, Steve Klynsma, Dave Sacha, and the tailgate committee for a memorable weekend. We will do this again in Philadelphia next year so make attendance a priority.
General Officer Announcements
Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta announced today that the President has made the following nominations:
Army Brig. Gen. John G. Rossi has been nominated for appointment to the rank of major general. Rossi is currently serving as commanding general, 32d Army Air Missile Defense Command, Fort Bliss, Texas.
Army Brig. Gen. John Uberti has been nominated for appointment to the rank of major general. Uberti is currently serving as deputy commanding general/chief of staff, Installation Management Command, San Antonio, Texas.
They join recently announced BG(P)s Miller, Snow, and Tovo to the Active Two Star Rank. Congratulations to all.
The Chief of Staff, Army announces the following officer assignments:
Brigadier General (Promotable) Jeffrey J. Snow, Director, J-5, United States Forces-Iraq, OPERATION NEW DAWN, Iraq to Director of Strategy, Plans and Policy, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, United States Army, Washington, DC.
Class of 1983 DLS speakers for the Spring 2012 The Department of BS&L has announced the upcoming speakers for our Class Gift.
GEN Dunwoody will be speaking on leadership at West Point on March 20 and 21, 2012. As one of the most senior women in the Army, she is the Commanding General for the US Army Materiel Command in charge of all matters related to logistics.
GEN Cone, USMA’79, will be speaking on leader development at West Point on March 30, 2012. He is the Training and Doctrine Command commander (TRADOC) and is responsible for all matters related to training (basic training, officer training, advanced training like company and battalion command courses, the War College, all enlisted training schools from sergeant to command sergeant major) and doctrine (all the technical manuals about how the Army is configured, the tactics, strategy, etc. for all branches of the Army). GEN Cone is a former BS&L instructor in Sociology.
Both generals will also likely address the future of the Army in terms of the structure, equipment, and missions, as well as discuss the impacts of the budget on the Army in terms of logistics (Dunwoody) and training (Cone).
Finally, Wendy Kopp, CEO and Founder of Teach for America, will also be speaking as a Class of 1983 Distinguished Leader at some point this spring

The Date has Changed!!! Save the Date – 30th Reunion 12-15 September 2013
Due to football schedule change, the date for our reunion has also moved. The weekend now is 12-15 September 2013. I know this change must have inconvenienced some of you who have already purchased plane tickets, but it was beyond our control! Army will beat Stanford on 14 September and hopefully we all will be there. FYI, the 30th Reunion usually draws 36% and we are going to plan for 300 Classmates and a total of 600 with guests. We have reserved the Westchester Marriott for this weekend. Put it on the calendar. Keep email and snail mail addresses updated with me and AOG for future mailings. Send a note to those ex-cadets and classmates not on my distro list. Let’s get everyone there for the 30th.
Class Offspring Update
Graduation for the Class of 2012 is fast approaching including a nice contingent of offspring – Tyler Carlson (Christian), Patrick Coe
(Joanne Cavanaugh), David C. Adamic (Stepson of Rick Dauch), Nathaniel Martins (Mark), Caitlin McArdle (Rich), and Daniel Mills (Mark). COL Donna Brazil and BG Tim Trainor will present the class gifts during graduation week. Congratulations to one and all. Let me know if I have missed someone.

Class of 1983 Cadet Spirit Award
The Proud to Be ’83 Cadet Spirit Award will be given out again in May this year. Last year the award went to 2LT Joterrica (Terri) Williams. She joined 2LT Lewis (2009) and 2LT Farley (2010) as past recipients. Will try to get more information out on this next newsletter.
Class Gift (2013)
The Class of 1983, Distinguished Leaders Series ($1.25M endowment) Class Gift Progress Update: As of January 2012, we have raised $890,793.82.....the Company level leadership has help add $70K in the 4th quarter 2011. We will need to increase the pace to reach our 30th Reunion gift goal and fulfill the commitment to endow the “Class of 1983 Distinguished Leader Series” by September 2013. Class participation stands at 28%.
