Q2 2012 Newsletter

Dear Proud to Be ’83,It is hard to believe that almost 29 years ago, we were making final preparations for graduation and entry into the Army. While some were well prepared for that journey, others needed the further development and mentorship of the senior officers and non-commissioned officers who greeted us at our first duty stations. Now, Proud to be 83’s final 100 or so active, guard, and reserve officers have provided that senior mentorship to our Army components and many are hanging up the boots for the last time. I know you will take the time to congratulate them on their success and help them in their future endeavors. I’d like to start this newsletter with the next generation taking up the call to service. The Best Ranger Competition 2012If you haven’t heard, Proud to Be, ’83 again has two offspring entrants in The Best Ranger Competition 13-15 April 2012. As you read this letter, Captain’s Andrew Batule ‘08 (Laurie and Kevin) and Shaun Pothin ‘08 (John) are representing their families and units with distinction. This year was the 29th anniversary of this competition between the best Rangers in our Army. The competition has evolved over the past twenty-eight years from one that was originally created to salute the best two-man “buddy” team in the Ranger Department at Fort Benning to determine the best two-man team from the entire United States Armed Forces. Great Job Andrew and Shaun. Shaun says Andrew has the longest hair of any captain in the Army. See attached pictures. Class Offspring Update COL Donna Brazil and BG Tim Trainor will present the class gifts, 2012 Commemorative Star Spangle Banner Silver Dollars, during graduation week to the Class of 2012 Class Offspring – Tyler Carlson (Christian), Patrick Coe (Joanne Cavanaugh), David C. Adamic (Stepson of Rick Dauch), Nathaniel Martins (Mark), Caitlin McArdle (Rich), and Daniel Mills (Mark). Congratulations to one and all.

Golf Outing Update

The Golfing Grads of USMA24rd Annual Reunion Golf Tournament Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel Conference Center at Grand Nationalon Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf TrailOpelika, AlabamaApril 19 - 22, 2012January, 2012In 2012, we will once again visit the Auburn Marriott Opelika at Grand National golf resort in Opelika, Alabama. This stop on the RTJ Trail was the location Jones himself proclaimed as “the single greatest site for a course” he had ever seen. The resort is located just a few miles from Auburn University. Grand National has been the host site for the 1997 Nike Tour Championship, the 1998 LPGA Tournament of Championships, and the 2000 NCAA Men’s Division I Championship. The basic three-day package is for the evenings of April 19 - 21. Additional night packages (accommodations and breakfasts only) are available for periods either before or after the basic package dates. Last year we were very fortunate to have astronaut Doug Wheelock, USMA ’83, speak to us about his recent stay at the International Space Station. This year, we have asked MG Bob Brown, USMA ’81, a B-ball player under Coach K and the current Fort Benning commander, to speak about the establishment of the US Army Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning. We have two changes for 2012. We will use the Short Course (the par 3 course) for the Two Man Best Ball and Scramble. The course will be set up with 6 holes greater than 175 yards, 6 holes between 125 and 175 yards, and 6 holes less than 125 yards. We will also allow players to choose between using the regular men’s tees (WHITE) or the senior’s tees (TEAL). However, players must indicate on the reply sheet which tees they will use so that the scorers can input this information into the computer. The hotel has given us the Lobby Lounge off the hotel lobby to use as our hospitality suite. Practice rounds will be available but you will have to contact the RTJ Pro, arrange your own times and foursomes, and guarantee payment. As usual, several of the participating classes will share in running this event. Our thanks go to them for all their help.We have made reservations for 160 golfers. We hope you will be among them… Tyler Dan Willson PS. We have a new website. Check it out at www.GolfingGrads ofUSMA.com The full reply document for the outing is located HERE (docs/2012_Letter_Reply_Sheet_Schedule.doc)

30 Year Class Gift

The class presented a gift to the Academy at our 20th reunion. Since then, we have not been in an active fundraising campaign, although I wish to thank the many classmates who have continued to make donations during this period. We chose as a class to support the West Point Leadership Center (docs/Reunion_30_Docs/LeadershipCenter83FINAL.pdf) . The time has come to raise awareness of this commitment as we approach our 30th Reunion. It is time to re-evaluate your commitment to this effort:Here is the PLEDGE FORM (docs/Reunion_30_Docs/83_pledge_card_4_2010_Final.pdf) which has the instructions on how to get your pledge to the Proud To Be Class Fund.
