USMA Class of 1968 Policy Regarding Honorary Membership
Article III of the Constitution of the Class of 1968 provides for the following three categories of Membership in the Class:
SECTION 1. The regular membership of the Class of 1968 shall automatically include all graduates of the Class of 1968. In addition, it may include Associate and Honorary Members.
a. Regular Members shall be all USMA graduates from the year 1968 who are officially recorded by the Association of Graduates, including those cadets who were reassigned to the Class from a higher class and who subsequently completed the requirements for graduation.
b. Associate Members shall include those persons who were members of the Class of 1968 at the time of acceptance of the Class into the Corps of Cadets but who are not Regular Members.
c. Honorary Members shall consist of all persons to whom the Standing Committee has offered membership and who have accepted this offer. The Standing Committee must have a majority vote of the quorum to approve an offer for Honorary Membership.
Nominating Procedures:
The Standing Committee will accept nominations for Honorary Membership from Regular, Associate and Honorary Members of the Class. Nominations must be submitted, in writing, to the Chairman of the Class Standing Committee who will forward the nomination to all members of the Standing Committee and call for a vote. (If any member wishes to discuss the nomination within the Committee, he must notify the Chairman within 48 hours of receiving the nomination. The Chairman will then arrange for a conference call before balloting. Committee members who have already voted will have the option to revote following the discussion.)
Standing Committee members will submit their “Yes” or “No” votes electronically or telephonically to the Chairman within 2 weeks of receiving the nomination. If a conference call is convened to discuss the nomination, members on the call may vote verbally following the discussion. A majority vote of a quorum (50% of the Committee members constitutes a quorum) in favor of the nomination is required for approval. If the nomination is approved, the Class President will contact the nominee to offer Honorary Membership in the Class. Once the nominee accepts, the Class will be notified, and the new, honorary Classmate will be entered into the Class Rolls.
Nominating Criteria:
Honorary membership in the Class of 1968 is reserved for individuals who, over the course of time or in one major event, have made a significant contribution to the United States, the United States Army, the United States Military Academy or to the Class of 1968.
By their actions, nominees must demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of “Duty, Honor, Country” and display an affinity for the Military Academy. A nominee must also have a “Special Connection” to the Class of 1968 and subscribe to the Class Motto, “No Task Too Great for 68.” In presenting a nomination to the Standing Committee, the nominating classmate should include the personal, academic and professional achievements which make the nominee uniquely qualified to be recognized as an Honorary Member of the USMA Class of 1968.
