Reminder of deadline for submissions for your Memory Book
I am told that you are men who understand and respond to deadlines.
So, here we are, checking off the calendar days and closing in on the 30th
of April, which is your deadline for submissions for your Memory Book.
We have brilliant essays, heart-touching short stories, poems, and
remembrances of SINK NAVY, THE GREAT SUGAR CAPER, and Mike Mears is
corralling those involved in the CANNON ESCAPADE. To date, none of
your GOAT HERDERS have come forward with their stories. Will Billy XVIth
be left out of this?
Your book is very close to being ready for a publisher. If any of you are
in that business, or have ties to those who are, we would very much appreciate
hearing from you.
I sent a note out to several of you asking about your Graduation Day and how
they thought we could muster memories of that morning. Ross Irvin, who has been
a great help and contributor to this effort, came through with a wonderful idea.
Many of you have submitted work to your book, and Ross has come up with a way
for those of you who are reluctant to put pen to paper, or fingers to the
keyboard, to contribute memories.
We are asking ALL of you to complete this sentence and become part of your
memory book:
"It is the morning of June 5, 1968. Lots of things are on your mind, but
mostly you are thinking about. . .”
I know this is a CAN DOno worrying about “writing skills”
here–just complete the sentence for your book, for your families, indeed, for
posterity. Your book paints a vivid picture of who you areand of that, you can
be very proud.
Thank you all so much for the openness, sharing, and kindness with which you
have greeted me and cooperated with this project.
