Bob Magruder has arranged golf outing during the days prior to the
class of '64
reunion.
This note resummarizes the activities from Bob's most recent email and
offers more details on possible non-golfer outings.
Tues, Wed, Thurs
GOLFERS SCHEDULE
0700-0800 Breakfast at the Thayer
0800-0830 Golfers drive to Golf Course
0900 Golf starts on each day (Tue, Wed, Thur)
1300 Lunch starts at the course (comes with entry on Tues only,
optional otherwise)
NONGOLFERS SCHEDULE
0700-0800 Breakfast at the Thayer
0800-0900 Decide on where to go, get organized into car pools, and
leave for a
venue.
1200-1300 Stop for lunch on the road
1300-1400 Sober up and return to West Point
So what do you have to do to participate?
Get
to West Point early on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and meet for
breakfast and with others and decide where you want to go today! Also
if you
answer calls on your cell phone please send Harvey Fraser your cell
phone
number by August 30 hfraser@west-point.org. Harvey's cell phone number
is 203-820-9066. Harvey will
prepare a roster to share that can help people link up in case of
coordination
issues or getting lost. You can also research the information provided
about
the potential sites and decide what you are most interested in. Do note
in your
planning that Storm King Art Center, Boscobel and Kykuit are closed on
Tuesday!
The golfers outings are scheduled at these locations
Tuesday, 7 September - The Club at Mansion Ridge, Monroe, NY
Wednesday, 8 September -Garrison Golf Club, Garrison, NY. Garrison is
just
across the river from West Point (it is a short drive). The Boscobel
restoration is nearby.
Thursday, 9 September -Patriot Hills Golf Club, Stony Point, NY.
Potential destinations(with driving directions) for outings include:

Driving Directions:
From the Thayer Hotel to 9w is directly south through Highland Falls
and follow
the signs to 9w North or South depending.
Also the Web addresses will have driving instructions and map pictures
for more
detailed investigation.

-9W North to NY218 (by the West Point Golf Course)
-West on 218. 1.2 miles
-NY-218 becomes NY-293. 6.7 miles
-Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto US-6. 2.8 miles:
-Take the RT-17 S ramp toward RT-32/SUFFERN/NEWBURGH. 0.2 miles
-Turn RIGHT onto NY-17. 0.2 miles
-Stay straight to go onto NY-32. 0.2 miles
-Turn RIGHT onto WOODBURY OUTLETS BLVD N. <0.1 miles
-Turn LEFT onto RING RD. 0.1 miles
-Turn RIGHT onto GRAPEVINE CT. <0.1 miles
-End at 877 Grapevine Ct Central Valley NY

-At the mall ask directions to get back to US 6 East
-218/293 East
-South on 9W to Highland Falls
New York City -- but that is
too much for me to describe here. There are fabulous restaurants,
museums, plays and attractions. New York City is about 60 miles away
and about an hour and a half drive or combine a drive and commuter
train. Museums include the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), Frick,
Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)
The Boscobel Restoration in

It is closed on Tuesday. Open at 10AM Tours take about 45 minutes and
cost
$10.00 age 62 and above $9.00. If you go here on Wednesday you are
invited to
join the golfers for lunch at the Garrison Golf Club at around 1300.
They have
a nice restaurant and nice views of West Point Granite walls. Some may
want to
make a side trip to the nearby Cold Spring, NY, which has a charming
downtown
area. Convenient for this outing or an outing to the Morse Mansion is a
visit
to the new contemporary art museum Dia:Beacon in Beacon, NY
Driving Instructions:
-9W S.
-Around Bear Mountain Circle and then Bear Mountain Bridge.
-At end of the Bridge turn North (Left) on the only road 9D.
-Boscobel is well marked on the left. 7.3 miles North of the bridge
-Cold Spring is an additional 1.2 miles on North on 9D to the traffic
light(or
8.5 miles North of the Bridge. Walk through the scenic downtown and
toward the
river West/left.
If you will join the golfers for lunch around 1PM then to get to
Garrison Golf
Club:
-head south from Cold Spring 3.2 miles(S from Boscobel 2 miles) and
turn East
on Snake Hill road. It is just North of a Gulf gas station. Snake Hill
road has
a traditional street sign and Hudson Highlands Land Trust on the corner
with a
small sign pointing to the golf course.
-1.6 miles on Snake Hill road will be the golf course entrance on the
left.
Return from course:
-Right from golf course on Snake Hill road. If you end up on a more
major
street (Route 9) turn right and almost immediately on Snake Hill road.
-at the end you will run into route 9D turn left to Bear Mountain
bridge
-Finish going North to Highland Falls and the Thayer Hotel.
The Samuel B. Morse Historic
Site, Poughkeepsie, NY 845-454-4500 Opens at
10AM http://www.morsehistoricsite.org/
. The Morse estate is open seven days a
week. The entrance fee is $7.00 seniors $6.00. Morse invented the Morse
code.
Driving instructions:
-9W North through Newburgh to I84 at least 15 miles
-I84 E across the Hudson and about 5 miles take Exit 13 (Route 9 -
toward
Poughkeepsie).
- Take Route 9 North. Go 11 miles.
- Turn left at Beechwood Ave. traffic light (Locust Grove parking lot).
Return:
-Ask instructions to Route 9 South
-I84 West
-After the Hudson bridge
-South on Route 9W
-At Highland falls exit to the Thayer Hotel
-The Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY near Cornwall.

-Left off exit onto Route 107 to light.

-There are many other great locations to visit in the Hudson valley
including
Kykuit the Rockefeller estate in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Phillipsburgh Manor
is
virtually "next door". Check it out at: http://www.hudsonvalley.org/web/kyku-main.html.
Part of it is open without
reservations, but the grand house tour requires reservations. Call
914-631-9491(alternate 914-631-3992) and it starts at 9:45AM and
1:45PM. It is
closed on Tuesdays. Price depends on what you do. There is a fabulous
restaurant and café on this estate called Blue Hill at Stone
Barn. Information
about Kykuit and several other great locations can be found at

-Right and then at the traffic circle take Route 9 South into Sleepy
Hollow
about 16 miles
-The entrance to Philipsburg Manor is on the right at the second
traffic light
south of Phelps Memorial Hospital.

-At Traffic Circle take Rt 9D north
-Across Bear Mountain Bridge
-North on 9W to Highland Falls and Thayer Hotel
