Golf 64: Ryder Cup, Colorado Part 2 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Al Russo
Wednesday, 30 September 2009

1. Concept of the Operation: The event will "generally" follow a Ryder Cup format of play and will include wives in the golf. Wives that do not play are encouraged to attend as there is plenty to do in the area; and other than the 5 hours a day when we are playing golf we will have the camaraderie of a Mini-reunion.

2. Dates 26 - 30 July, 2010. Anyone wanting to play more is welcome to come early or stay later as we have many great courses in the area. (This date has been coordinated with the Army Football Club which will hold its annual event on 16 - 17 July , 2010)

3. Schedule overview:

Mon, 26 July -    Arrival, reception, and practice round if desired (Probably at USAFA - Blue)

Tues, 27 July -   Golf at Bear Dance and dinner at  Maggianos

Wed , 28 July -  Golf at Broadmoor (East) and dinner at Trail Dust

Thur, 29 July -    Golf at The Ridge at Castle Pines North and dinner with award's ceremony at Morton's

Fri, 30 July -       Departure or optional golf

2. Lodging: The Inverness Hotel - http://www.invernesshotel.com/denver-hotel-map.php This a fabulous Four Diamond facility with a golf course and practice facility on the premises.  Their room rates run in the $200 plus range but the chairman of our lodging selection committee negotiated a rate of $139 which will include a complimentary hot breakfast (Which we have sampled and it is great),  guest room high speed Internet (They usually charge$10/day), hotel public area wireless Internet, local phone calls, valet and self parking, and shuttle service within a five mile radius.(Our evening restaurants are all within the 5 mile radius) We will also have our own private Hospitality Room where we can congregate, post golf results and standings, and stock with our own privately purchased beverages. (Alcoholic and non-alcoholic).

5.Tee times: We are currently planning to start play each day between 0800 and 0900. By starting this early we will be able to use shotgun starts on at least two of the courses and maybe all three. It also gives any golf nut who desires to play 36 a chance to do so.

6. Meals:

    Break -  Included with lodging.

Lunch -  On own at course or pre-arranged at the course after play if we can do shotgun starts.

Dinner -  Three great restaurants as scheduled in 3 above. Based upon the final quotes received, the chairman of the meals committee may decide to substitute a dinner at the Inverness for one of the currently planned locations.

7. Drinks: Attendees will pay for own drinks. One non-alcoholic beverage is included at the Trail Dust dinner meal. Also as mentioned above we will be able to stock the Hospitality Room to save on the hotel priced drinks.

7. Opening Reception: Catered at either our house (Annan's) or if we get too large at a local venue TBD. The chairman of the meals committee has a super caterer with whom she has worked for many years. He will supply great food at a great price.

8. Transportation

    A. Upon arrival - get rental car or take Super Shuttle (or other) to the hotel.

    B. Daily -  To the course, share rides using rental cars and the cars of the players from the local area.  Also can use the free hotel shuttle which provides transportation to anywhere within the 5 mile radius. All dinner locations are within 5 miles.

    C. Light-rail to downtown Denver is available with the station being within the 5 mile radius of the hotel.

9. Golf:

    A. Ryder Cup format - Fourball, foursomes and singles. Modified as required to meet our own needs and desires. See Competition Czar responsibilities below.

    B. East vs.West: We will divide attendees into two teams that pit  the East vs.West. The final exact NS line of demarcation for East or West will not be drawn until we know who is attending and in turn be able to determine where we draw the line to have two equal size squads. This format also provides us the opportunity to play with different folks each day.

    C. Request that nominations or volunteers for team captains be sent to me.

    D. Request that nominations or volunteers for "Competition Czar" also be sent to me. This person would make decisions on rules/format of play, receive the daily team lists from the team captains and in turn develop the daily "Pairings". And of course rule on any "Protests".

   E. Attendees limited to classmates and wives. (No sons/daughters/other ringers)

   F. Awards - TBD by the local organizing committee and the "Competition Czar".

10. Courses: (Prices include green fees, carts and practice balls)

    A. Bear Dance: Voted "Best of" on many lists and home to the Colorado Section of the Professional Golfer's Association of America. 4 1/2 Stars in Golf Digest  http://www.beardancegolf.com/  Great mountain views and elevation changes. ($77)

    B. Broadmoor East: Donald Ross/Trent Jones Course.  Hosted the 1959 U.S. Amateur, which was Jack Nicklaus' first major win, the 1964 U.S. Amateur, 1995 U.S. Women's Open, which was Annika Sorenstam's first major title.  Most recently, it served as the host course for the 2008 U.S. Senior Open won by Eduardo Romero.  It will host The 2011 U. S. Women's Open. 4 1/2 Stars in Golf Digest http://www.broadmoor.com/east-golf-course.php (Approx $84)

     C. Ridge at Castle Pines North: Too many "Best ofs" to list but you can see them on their web site http://www.theridgecpn.com/index.php  Great mountain views and elevation changes. ($110)

So let me know:

1. If there is anything here that is way off base from what you may have been anticipating.

2. If you would like to volunteer to be a team captain or The Competition Czar, or if you have any nominations for those positions.

My plan is to sign contracts with the courses, the restaurants and the motel by the end of the month so we will be able to announce the details of the event at the class reunion in Sep.

Request you talk this up with other classmates that are not on the golf forum so we can have as big a turnout as possible at what I think will be a great event. Once the details are set I will of course send notice out via the golf forum and a shot on the class forum.

Regards,

Bill Annan
