Ssteve Weisel reports on hiking in North Carolina
During ealy August, a group of seven USMA '64 guys assembled in Highlands, NC for a week of hiking. Here is a picture of the group. L-R. Mont Hubbard, Fred Taylor, Ben Huneycutt, Steve Weisel, George Domas, Norm Gill and Bill Hoover. (Ken Kvam, couldn't make it but we connected with him on Skype.) We are at the top of Clingman's Dome, the point of highest elevation on the Appalachian Trail.
We did day hikes covering about 41 miles, but we were not roughing it between our day hikes. We stayed at a vacation home owned by the Huneycutts and, thanks to Ginny Huneycutt, had terrific homemade meals throughout. Had a great time, not only hiking and driving around the area, but enjoying cameraderie, watching Band of Brothers, and keeping thrists quenched. The day hikes planned by Ben were absolutely gorgeous. They included some of us going over a 20 foot waterfall in Gorges State Park as well as a swimming interlude in the Chattooga River of the movie "Deliverance" fame.
Here are a couple more snapshots.
The falls we went over
The falls pictured below was over 100 feet high.
A typical vista of the type we enjoyed all week.
The next one shows Bill finding the rocks Norm had put in his day pack.
