118th Column

Special Feature -- see the photos at the bottom of this page

Ahead of the power curve, that is, not due till 1 July!  Because a picture is worth a thousand words and because I am timely enough, this one will be devoted to photographs.  The inventory technique will be LIFO, last in first out.

Thanks to Jack Halsey we have photos from the Two-River Rhone-Soane cruise in France.  The first show trip organizers with the Captain of the first boat.  The second is the folklore group El Golfo entertaining our ’58 cruisers, a few of which can be identified.  Number three is Jae Stanton doing his rendition of “El Torro.”  Stan Bacon provided a great report via the class list server.  If you are not on email, you should be!

Ed Ofgant, retired long-time president of WPSNE (New England), provided the Founder’s Day photo of three ’58 files who made the scene.  I believe this is first appearance in the column for Joe Gal, former G2 file who left us for MIT yearling year (I think).  Joe found us or someone in G2 found him back in 1999.  He has now been to a Founder’s Day dinner, sadly not all grads and probably not all ’58 files have done that.

Someone, probably Ken Phillips, sent photos of A2 mini in Pensacola (reported in 117th column in Jul/Aug Assembly).  Unfortunately, the dark background makes them not useable for our magazine.  I have sent them on to Alan Salisbury for his class history project files.   This is yet another opportunity to advertise the work of Alan and committee on their project to do something special in terms of class history for the 50th in 2008.  Scary thought our 50th, but between now and then we will have many mini-reunions in addition to our 45th in 2003.  The basic messages here are two: attend the minis and 45th and send information to Alan via email at usma58history@aol.com or snail mail at 2605 Geneva Hill Court, Oakton, VA 22124-1534.   Back to photos.  Next is F1 files who attended Eddie Jasaitis’ final P-rade at Arlington National Cemetery (reported in 117th).  The date on the photo is incorrect, blame in on someone’s camera.  According to F1 CCQ Bob Rhodes, this event garnered two who had missed earlier F1 mini-reunions and other class gatherings: Jim Frick and Peeps Pedersen who goes by Mil these days.  As Dusty knows, changing one’s name after 40 years is difficult and he is guilty in this instance.

Sam Myers captured an impromptu gathering of ‘58 Texans on film.  The event was “Welcome to Texas” dinner for Ben and Jane Crosby.  They are living in Georgetown, about 30 miles north of Austin.  Sam sent the photo after returning from leading a two-week “caravan” of their Airstream RV group.  He said leading the convoy of travel trailers and motor homes through the piney woods of East TX and Cajun Country LA was easier than tanks around Nuremberg on radio listening silence.

The next is from TK Smith on the occasion of commissioning son Brian as an Ensign in USN on 4 Jan 00.  Brian is a graduate of Notre Dame NROTC.  Next to them is son TK Jr, USAF major and graduate of AFA who administered to oath of office to his brother!

Seven is the normal limit, but not having had any photos recently, perhaps my boss and editor will cut a bit of slack.  If so, the next three are from Palmer McGrew and record the Ski Austria trip in Jan 00.  One is skiers, another is diners and the last is sightseers.

Another lost class ring.  John Herren lost his on a DC tennis court in 1980s.

Some snail mail IOUs.  Thanks to Don Johnson, “Professor Emeritus” of Lynchburg College (as of 12 May 00) for sending an article about Associate Professor, Chuck Toftoy, Director of the GWU Entrepreneurship Small Business Management Program.

Thanks to Joyce Malone De Re, for a lovely letter after the VN Memorial service on 21 May.  I hope that most saw the 30 seconds or so used by ABC for its Memorial Day “Good Morning America” show.

Back from two weeks in UK on Fri 23 June and off to sunny Redstone Arsenal tomorrow morning, therefore, that’s it for this one.  By the time you read it in Sep-Oct Assembly, we will be gathering in Portland for a maxi-mini-reunion.  If you miss Portland, shame on you!  For those who come to Portland and those who do not, plan now to make the next mini in Santa Fe on 1-4 Nov 2001 (Tom Claffey).  Even earlier class gathering opportunities include NM State game (Gerry Schurtz) and class Beat Navy Tailgate (Ed Weckel).
