USMA 1956 Class Gift

"Soft Opening" and Gift Dedication

On a beautiful Spring day in May 2006, we dedicated the Class of 1956 Walkway, culminating a nine year project. This gift to West Point symbolizes the Warrior Spirit of the Class of 1956, and West Pointers' contributions during the Cold War period of our nation's history (1945-1991). We tried to capture symbols of that period as well as historic quotations that reflected the Class of 1956's view on DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY and LEADERS of CHARACTER. It is the hope of the Class of 1956 that future members of the Long Gray Line will gain knowledge of the Cold War and inspiration from a walk down the Class of 1956 Walkway.

Gift Dedication  -  22 May 2006

• Class President, Mike Conrad, presents the Gift to the Supe., 22 May 2006.
• The Supe (LTG Lennox) accepts the Gift on behalf of the Secretary of the Army and West Point.
• Official "Ribbon Cutting" to open the Walkway: (L-R: Ward LeHardy, Mike Conrad, Don Ackerman, Kevin Anderson, LTG Lennox,
  Norm Schwarzkopf, Marcia Randall, Al Hoffman, and Sam Kem).
• The completed Class of 1956 Walkway, our 50th Anniversary gift to West Point.
• Barbara Charles and Bob Staples, the design contractors who guided the details of the Walkway design for seven years,
  from concept to dedication.
