Order of Business – Second Meeting of the Elected Committee and others selected to conduct the business of the West Point Class of 1955 (EXCOM) for the period June 2010 – 2015 (including the 60th Class Reunion) took place by teleconference on October 7, 2010. The President called the meeting to order at 1500 EDT, and indicated its sole purpose was to select which classmate or classmates the Class would nominate to receive an Academy 2011 Distinguished Graduate Award and their order of preference if applicable. No official agenda had been prepared for the meeting. The President, Vice President, Treasurer, Historian, ISO, Secretary and Co-Chair of the Major Awards Committee were present.
MAJOR AWARDS COMMITTEE REPORT: Following the 21 August 2010 meeting, Ted Gay (Committee Co-Chair), submitted to individual EXCOM members, for their review, the existing letters of recommendation and supporting attachments for each of our Class candidates for a 2011 Distinguished Graduate Award. During the teleconference, Ted briefly discussed our options for submitting either or both classmate(s). A motion was made and seconded to discuss those options. If more than one classmate is submitted for consideration, the Class must indicate its order of preference for selection, Once nominated, candidates not selected for the Award are automatically reconsidered for a total period of three years. Experience and general practice have shown the submission of more than one candidate degrades the possibility of either being selected.. After discussion, the EXCOM voted to submit a single candidate – Carl McNair. Ted will rewrite the Class's original nomination letter of Carl to include recent accomplishments, especially that he was awarded the 2009 Creighton Abrams award. The President will confer with the preparer of the other nomination and discuss the EXCOM's decision. He will point out the other candidate's high viability as a future Class nominee.
There being no further business, the President adjourned the meeting at 1553 EDT.
