During the Vail Mini (in '98, I think), Don, Joyce, Laura and I rented a car and drove to the town that had a railroad that went up to the now defunct mines. We had a really great time, and it was the first time that we had the good fortune to spend time with Don and Joyce. They were a fun couple to be with.

Don, my Classmate and Companymate, you were one I looked up to. No, not just because you were older, but because you engendered the qualities of Duty Honor and Country we all sought. You were experienced far beyond your your years and demonstrated those qualities of leadership throughout your career in the Armed Forces. You have served us and your Country well and deserve the thanks of a grateful Nation. I am proud to have known you and you will be missed. Fare well old friend.

Don was my hero plebe year in A2...not only had he completed two years at the Naval Academy, but he was a former 82d Abn trooper wth Jump wings! In those days there weren't many cadets walking around with Jump wings pinned proudly on their chests. Don was one of a few.

As the years passed, I came to know Don as one of the finest human beings I had ever met. His determination to get into USMA and graduate was awe inspiring..despite a medical turnback, Don persisted and graduated in 1955).

Rest easy, my friend....You fought the good fight .

Don & I aways considered ourselves the brothers we never had. We commanded the same Special Forces "A" team together, our families lived as neighbors, and our children grew up with each other. When Don and I served in 'Nam, we even experienced many actions together. A most memorable moment was while Don was the Berlin Brigade S-3, and my tour was in Iran; we arranged a parachute jump near Munich with my Iranian SF team, and then flew to Berlin to stay with Don and Nancy. What a wonderful time! I will miss calling him during Army/Navy games to kibitz about all our previous Army football times together. His godson (my youngest) will sorely miss his advisements. To Danny, Donna, and Mary my heartfelt sincere condolences.

Don Reid was one of a kind. I had the privilege of rooming with Don during second beast detail of our firstie year. He was one super guy and all Regular Army. The plebes in our platoon were all better off for his leadership--although they might not have thought so at the time. He was one that was very reluctant to see the admission of women into West Point. A case in point was at our 35th reunion when he was standing next to me with the Corps formed up in front of us on the plain waiting to pass in review. After the Brigade Commander called for the Battalions to come to attention, the quiet was broken with a very high pitched and shrill voice that was unmistakenly female calling her Battalion to attention. I sensed a great uneasiness in Don and all he said was "Oh my God!"

Don was an outstanding leader, a truly great person and a real credit to West Point. He will be sorely missed. Don, well done--be thou at peace.

Don was a wonderful friend, and all of us will sincerely miss his contributions to the Sand Hills West Point Society in Fayetteville; his love for his Family and for God: and for being a great example of a true Paratrooper--101st Airborne Division; Advisor, Vietnamese Airborne Brigade; Special Forces "Green Beret"--and I think that he was our only Paratrooper while we were cadets. He also served with distinction in a number of other units in The U. S. Army.

Don leaves behind a great family, and I know that they will miss him so very much. His son, Dan, Lt. Col. in the U. S. Army Reserves, is presently serving in Iraq.

Rest In Peace Friend!

It is so sad to lose "Uncle Don" our wonderful classmate. His wit and friendliness will be missed. He was a member of a great and caring A2 company of classmates. He and the rest of us survived Patton Jr and Wozencraft. So many precious memories.

We will miss you Don

Don Reid and I and 26 others like us joined the Corps initially on (5 JULy 1950). All 28 of us finally graduated with the Class of 1955). Don was an impressive individual--especially to a 17 year old straight out of high school in Indiana. Don impressed me all his life. I had never known a paratrooper, nor had I known anyone who went to Annapolis and then left to become a Cadet at West Point. Don and I did C Squad football together, he as manager and I as a scrub defensive halfback. He engendered respect. I recall his marriage to Joyce and the beauty of Joyce and the ceremony. They made the Class of 1955) proud. I am confident when my green light goes on, Don Reid will be Jumpmaster!

IN SADNESS AND IN MEMORY OF DON REID:

First, and in sadness, let me express our deepest condolences to Joyce Reid and the children of Don Reid upon his passing earlier this month and interment at Arlington Cemetery on Thursday, (FEB 15. Although Don was originally a member of the Class of '54, and later turned back to the Class of 1955) in Company A2, he was a giant among us. I have perhaps told more associates over my lifetime about Don Reid's love and commitment to West Point than any other I know in any class or generation. Not only was Don a five year man, but he aspired to attend the academy from childhood and upon turning seventeen (born in Peabody, MA, 4 August 1928) with his mother signing his recruiting papers on his birthday so I am told, he joined the Army and served two years in the airborne (wearing those silver jump wings proudly his five years as a cadet). Upon first being offered an appointment to Annapolis, he joined their Class of 1952) and served as a Midshipman until his 2d class summer when he was offered his appointment to West Point. He resigned from Annapolis and was sworn in with the West Point Class of 1954) on July 5 (1950), 55 days short of his 22d birthday. Don was an upper-class football manager and I was a "plebe" football manager following his leadership and came to know him well. We also served on the Public Information Detail for four years, but In First Class year, Don became ill and was evacuated to Walter Reed. By pressing his case with the medical authorities, he convinced them that he was still physically fit for the rigors of his Infantry career to come. He was then set back to our class wherein he earned his major "A" in football and never lost his love for Army football, watching old films all the way up to his recent years when affected by the dreaded Alzheimer's. As young LTC Dan Reid, just back from the battlefields of Iraq, said of his dad during the graveside services at Arlington, Don's final thoughts were always of the Corps and the Corps. What a fitting tribute with over fifty of his family and friends gathered for his final salute on a clear, cold, 24 degree day, a wind chill of 10 degrees, snow and ice abounded. I know Don must have smiled upon us "Winter Rangers" gathered in his honor. At the reception later, I shared with young Dan the story of our first meeting him over 40 years ago ,- at our 10th Reunion at West Point in June 1965). Don had brought young Dan, age five, to the reunion (also Ike's 50th year Reunion for '15 and the Alumni dinner dance that evening in Washington Hall. The Reids had brought Dan with them to the banquet and Jo Ann and I were seated at the same table together with '55. By 9PM, young Dan was sound asleep with his head on the table and I asked Don why would you bring a five year old that far that late for an Alumni Dinner. Don's simple reply was "I want him to know and love West Point as much as I do." That was the Don Reid we knew (MAY he rest in eternal peace.

I would like to openly thank Jack McCloskey, our Class LCA, who, along with his wife Judy, assisted Joyce and the family with compassion and concern throughout Don's illness and passing. Jack, Dan Moses, and the other classmates and spouses in the Fayetteville area were a great comfort over these months of illness. Dan and Jack drove up to DC and joined me for the viewing the night before as we met with the family and heard wonderful stories of Don's life and paternal leadership with them. Don was laid to rest in his Blue Mess, with full decorations and wearing his beloved West Point ring, as soft music in the chapel echoed his favorite Academy and Army tunes. His three children, Donna, Mary and Dan were all there with the grandchildren. After the funeral on Thursday, family and friends gathered for a reception/luncheon at the Fort Myer Officers' Mess with Joyce Reid and all of the children. Classmates attending were: Jack McCloskey, Chuck Roades, Ray Gunderson, Dan Moses, Tommy West, Rich Miller, Bob Russell, John Sloan, myself and George Robertson (Class of 1958). (MAY Don rest in honored glory among the Saints, remembered for his good work on this earth and (MAY his family and friends find comfort in our memories of yesteryear. From graduation day, June 7 (1955), when Don was 26 years, 10 months of age, he was our oldest living classmate, and will be long remembered and sorely missed by us all.
