In 1989) I published The Crucial Ligaments, subject knee ligament surgery. It represented all I had learned at West Point and in the Military on care of the injured knee. When asked by the publisher (Churchill Livingston) the target audience I said "elite knee surgeons". They asked how many of those there were in the world and I said about 150. The 1st Edition sold about 8,500 copies so either I was wrong or their are more of us that think we are elite than I realized. We did a second edition published in 1997) and the target audience remained about the same. Both these books are now out of print. Two years ago when I moved to Vail I was about ready to tackle a new book entitled The Crucial Principles which would gather the best of the first two books and broaden the market a bit to anyone taking care of knee injuries. Realizing that I was enjoying time in Vail with Dr Steadman and that I have enormous respect for his surgical contributions to the care of the knee, I discussed with him the possibility of combining our efforts. This we have done for the betterment of the book and whatever follows and The Crucial Principles co-authored by Feagin and Steadman will be published by Williams and Wilkins in March of 2008). I will donate a copy to the West Point Library, to Keller Army Hospital and send money to the Class Fund but admire Joe Franklin even more for donating his royalties to West Point.
