John Daly was my classmate, company E-1 mate, and roommate for one year. When we all went to Washington to march in the inaugural parade for President Eisenhower, John's parents somehow arranged for several of us to get tickets to the Inaugural Ball. We already had our full-dress uniforms for the parade, so it was an easy transition, and a lot warmer inside than it had been during the parade. Our seats were in a box, above the floor level, so we could see all the throng milling around on the dance floor. There were too many people to rally call it dancing. We were also able to see Ike and Mammie and family when they came in, and left after awhile to attend another ball. It was fun to have John as a roommate, and we were all saddened when he became our first casualty. Robert M. Hinrichs of that class had no e-mail so I'm writing you. I did gardening in high school in the early 60's for Col. John C. & Carol Daly of Kent Place, Alexandria, Va. Mrs. Daly talked about her late son Johnny and said his godfather was Gen. Wainright. Her grandfather was Union cavalry Gen. Alvan C. Gillem who in 1873 led the 1st Cavalry against the Modoc Indians. Camp Gillem in Lava Beds National Monument in northern Calif. is named for him. I was in Personnel with the 1st Air Cav in Vietnam 1969), 70. For a speech this month for Oregon's 150th anniversary I mentioned the Modoc War and Mrs. Daly's connection. Would anyone in the class of '55 have documentation for Johnny's godfather? Mrs. Daly attended the Episcopal church at the top of Monticello Blvd. in Alexandria. Respectfully, William L. Bailey 6114 NE 35th Pl. Portland, OR 97211 971-219-0725 |
