Loomis Leslie Crandall was born on 19 August 1931 in Webb City, Missouri. He was appointed to West Point from the 7th Congressional District of Missouri and entered on 3 July 1951. he was in Company M1 and a Cadet Lieutenant and Battalion Training Office his first class year. He graduated on 7 June 1955 and was commissioned in the US Army in the Armor.

How I got my appointment to West Point

This is an appropriate day to write LOO'S "HOW I GOT THERE". Loo would have been 79 years old today--Born Aug.19, 1931.

Loomis Leslie Crandall graduated from Webb City, Missouri High School with about 60 other classmates in 1949. Thereafter, he attended Joplin Junior College. He was dating a girl from a prestigious family, & her Mother suggested that he should apply for West Point. (he laughingly told me, one time, he thought the Mother wanted to get him far away from her daughter) . Through her, he was put in touch with a Missouri Congressman, Dewey Short. Loo was appointed as the 2 or 3rd alternate, but the principal appointee accepted the invitation.

The Korean War had commenced, & Loo, & his friend, Dale Shellhorn, who became the Chief Engineer on Boeing's B-1 program & later the Program Manager for the B-2 bomber, at Boeing, decided to join the Marine Corps. Loo was sent to Camp Pendelton, in Ca. for boot camp. From there, he was assigned to El Toro, where he attended Telephone School and ran on the track team. After 10 months in the Marine Corps, he was summoned to the Commandant's office, where he was told that he had received a principal appointment to West Point. He was totally surprised, & very happy. He often praised the Marine Corps for doing everything possible to get him ready to enter West Point in July 1951. Boot Camp readied him for Plebe Year.

Throughout Loo's career with G.E. & then, with Boeing, he upheld the ideals of West Point which he held dear to his heart. He retired, from Boeing, after 28 years, while he was the Program Manager, for a Boeing contract at China Lake Naval Base in CA.

We were married 48 + years when Loo died, suddenly, while playing golf in Woodinville, WA. We have 5 grown children--3 daughters & 2 sons, & 17 grandchildren. He was blessed to have known all of our grandchildren before God took him HOME.
