I barely knew John at West Point, but we became friends after leaving the Army when we attended several MBA classes together at NYU in the '60's. Since we both lived in northern New Jersey, our families socialized together as well. John (MAY have been a goat at West Point (see Welter's entry), but he succeeded in business and was Chief Investment Officer at Hudson United Bancorp at the time of his death. He was always devoted to his family, his work, his religious faith, and to the priciples of "Duty, Honor, Country." He will be missed by many. John always had a smile and a good word as we worked our way through the Last Sections together. Well done John, be at peace, Willy A Fellow Jerseyite & Goat Bill Welter October 31, 2002) One of my earliest memories of arrival in B-2 in September 1951) was John coming up to each member of the new class, introducing himself and telling us that he was a "turnback" and would be available to help us with any rough spots. Over the next 4 years, John was always cheerful and helpful. I last saw John at a football game at Michie in the fall of 1967). He was still his happy, smiling self. That is the way I'll remember him. Bob Deardorff November 3, 2002) John Calley was my roommate plebe year, and the guy who showed me how to survive as a plebe. He was a turnback, and knew the system, having been through it before. He showed us all how to keep things in perspective, especially when the upperclassmen got down on any of us, which seemed to be all the time. John always had a smile and a word of encouragement,- like a big brother when you needed one. He was one of the most upbeat persons I ever met. He had his own cross to bear, in the form of academics, but his attitude was one of perseverance and dedication. He was dedicated to getting through West Point, and never wavered in that resolve. I think he succeeded by sheer force of will. He was strongly religious, which I expect was a major support to him, not only at West Point, but throughout his life. Only those of us who stood under that sword of Democles year after year could know what strength the effort either put into or took out of us. I suspect everything good and noble was put into you. My dear friend John Calley always approached "challenges" as opportunities and we shared many oppoprtunities, mainly with the academic department. John was committed to success as a cadet,as a professional in the banking world and certainly as a husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all that knew him and especially those of us that he touched with his presence. Rest in Peace John. His religious faith was an inspiration to someone who went to the big Chapel. He was one of the many in our class that found the Army was not their calling and found success serving our country in other ways. I will miss him and he will live always in my most fond memories.
