I remember Dick as a classmate with a very friendly half-smile. He always had a pleasant greeting for me; I felt that he liked me although I can't say why. I felt a great loss when he died so young.

Those of us in F-1 got a first hand look at personal courage when Dick became ill with cancer in our First Class year. There was no whining, no complaining ... he just sucked it up and moved ahead with life. He would have made a splendid career soldier. I had the pleasure to know his son during my year at Carlisle Barracks when he played baseball with my son. He was a fine young man and Dick would have been very proud of him.
