Edward Thomas Richards was born on 4 June 1932 in New York. He was appointed to West Point from the 14th Congressional District of New Jersey and entered on 3 July 1951. After Beast Barracks, he was in Company D 1. He was discharged on 31 December 1951 for deficiency in Mathematics. He was
reexamined in March 1952 and declared proficient. He joined the class of 1956 on 25 August 1952 and was in Company I 2. He graduated on 5 June 1956 and was commissioned in the US Army in the Infantry.

Edward 'Ed' Thomas Richards died on 24 Sep 10 after a long battle with cancer. He passed peacefully after being in a coma for several days. He was at home, in his own bed, surrounded by his wife Pat and his four children. On 29 September, a visitation was held at the Nelson Funeral Home in Williamsburg, VA. The funeral was held at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Williamsburg on 30 September with burial following in Williamsburg Memorial Park.
