Carl Goldstein
Friend of the Class of 55

On Nov 3, a ceremony was held at West Point to officially recognize Carl Goldstein as a Friend of the Class of 55. Carl was Kelly's main assistant in the running of the famous Lichtenberg tailgate parties at West Point and Carl continues to keep them going in Kelly's name.

The ceremony was kicked off after the Army/Air Force game with an introduction by the Supt, LTG Huntoon. Our Class President introduced Pat Vitty who presented Carl with a grey apron to wear at the tailgates saying 'Generous Friend' in black and 'Class of 1955' in gold. Charlie then presented Carl with a Certificate designating him as an Official Friend of the Class of 1955. Carl accepted the certificate wearing his new tailgate apron.

As a 'Friend of the Class' we will add Carl to our on-line roster and provide him access to our Class nets and Home Page.

The pictures from the ceremony may be seen at

His goodwill and best wishes, along with his sage wisdom and tireless hard work, made the Friars Club all the better for having him as a member. In his role as House Committee Chairman, Governor of the Friars Club, Vice President of the Friars Foundation and Chairman of its Adopt a Scholar program; there has never been a more committed Friar than was he.

USMA Class of 1955 Housing Area

Kelly Lichtenberg
[JUN 2008]

The USMA Coaches Housing Project, sponsored by the Class of 1955, under the guidance of Herb (Kelly) Lichtenberg, is completed and the seventeen houses are occupied by ODIA Corps Squad Head Coaches. The entire Housing Area is prominently identified by the Brass Plaque on the huge boulder at the entrance, which reflects 'USMA Class of 1955'.

Upon the completion of the first eight houses, Kelly 'named' each by placing a small placard with the name of an individual on the lawn in front of the house. It was his plan to continue this practice as the remaining houses were completed. When we lost Kelly, Lou Gross, class of 1954, replaced Kelly and continued the project to its completion. Three additional names were added by Lou Gross, leaving six without the placard.

A few weeks ago, Lou contacted me and asked that I provide six names for the, to date, unnamed houses. I tasked a past president of the class to organize a committee and provide six recommended names. After a very thorough and detailed process, six names were recommended, and the Class EXCOM voted to accept the recommendations. The names were provided to Lou Gross, and they will be included on the placards.

The next, and final, item to be accomplished with this project is to organize and schedule a formal presentation of this Class gift to West Point. Lou Gross and I are in the process of coordinating this with the appropriate authorities. Stay tuned, folks, for this glorious event.

USMA Class of 1955 Housing Area

The EXCOM voted to place ten small brass plaques on the houses in the coach housing area at an approximate cost of $6000. Each plaque would have one name from the following list: Pete Fikaris, Charlie Johnson and Dave Wheeler (Added by Lou Gross); Tommy Bell, Dave Burroughs, Tom McCarthy, Donne Olvey, Bob Strati and Fred Woerner (Named by Committe); and Carl Goldstein Friend of West Point Class of 1955. Classmates will have West Point Class of 1955 with their names. Tom Horst will check to see if plaques are authorized for the houses and other details.

Dedication of Goldstein Field

West Point Association of Graduates, in partnership with Army West Point Athletics, dedicated the new Goldstein Field on May 6. The field is named in memory of Carl Goldstein, a longtime West Point supporter and dedicated Army fan. Lead donors to the project are the Goldstein and Lichtenberg families, with additional gifts from Chris C. Casciato and Anthony Guzzi.

The new artificial turf field adjacent to the practice football field and to the east of the Foley Athletic Center will provide additional practice space for corps squad teams. Goldstein Field will support the increased needs of existing athletics programs, as well as the new Women's Lacrosse team.

Carl Goldstein was the longtime business partner and friend of Herbert S. Lichtenberg '55 and his brother, Alan A. Lichtenberg '51. Mr. Goldstein was a loyal supporter of West Point and he was named an honorary member of the USMA Class of 1955. Along with the Lichtenberg family, he funded athletics as well as programming and capital needs for the Jewish community at West Point.
