Edgar Louis Dilts was born on 30 June 1929 in North Carolina and was appointed to West Point from the 6th Congressional District of North Carolina. He entered West Point on 5 July 1950 and was discharged on 2 January 1951 for deficiency in Portuguese. He was reexamined in March 1951, declared proficient and joined the Class of 1955 on 30 August 1951. He was in Company I-2. He was discharged on 11 June 1954 for deficiency in Electricity and Mechanics of Solids.

Edgar Dilts

American Tobacco Co. DURHAM, N.C. -- Mr. Edgar Louis Dilts of Durham, N.C., a seasonal resident of Winter Haven, died of cancer Thursday (Dec. 26, 2002) in Winter Haven. He was 73. He was born in Durham, N.C., on June 30, 1929. He was a retired supervisor in the engineering department for the American Tobacco Co. in Durham of 31 years. He attended Duke University and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Mr. Dilts is survived by his wife, Shirley Dilts, Winter Haven; daughter, Denise D. Newton, Durham; son, Edgar L. Dilts Jr., Fort Lauderdale; brother, Charles R. Dilts, Durham; three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Steele's Family Funeral Services, 207 Burns Lane S.E., Winter Haven. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, Winter Haven.

Shirley Sykes Dilts


WINTER HAVEN - Mrs. Shirley Sykes Dilts, 74, died peacefully Friday, July 3, 2009 due to heart failure. Mrs. Dilts was born Oct. 20, 1934 in Abbeville, Alabama to William R. & Foye E. Sykes. She was of the Baptist faith. She moved to Florida at an early age and attended Schools in Avon Park, Bartow, and Winter Haven High, graduating in 1953. She was active in school and church choirs and sang solo soprano at Bartow and Winter Haven High, and area churches. She loved Broadway and Movie musicals and was an avid Bridge player. She especially enjoyed her ladies bridge club in Durham, N. C.

After high school she was sent to Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C. for treatment. She met her future husband, Edgar L Dilts, Sr., married and spent most of her married life living in Durham. She was employed as a fashion consultant for Catherine's Shoppes in Durham for over 21 years. She moved back to Winter Haven in 1990.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L, Dilts, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Denise Newton (Walter), Bahama. N.C., son, Ed Dilts, Jr. (Vera), Winter Haven, brother, Jack V. Sykes (Sue), sister, Saundra Anderson, Winter Haven, brother-in-law Charles Dilts (Lynne), Durham, N.C., nieces, nephews and three grand children.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, July 9th 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Steele's Funeral Home, 207 Burns Lane, SE, Winter Haven, FL. Graveside services will be Friday, July 10th, at 11:00 AM at Rolling Hills Cemetery, Old Lucerne Park Rd., Winter Haven, FL. Steele's Family Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.
