Frank George Walton

Frank George Waltonwas born on18 March1933 in Haddonfield, New Jersey. He was appointed to West Pointby US Senator Hendrickson of New Jerseyand entered on 3 July 1951. He was in Company B1, playedfootball for four years and was on the track team for four years. He was a Cadet Lieutenant andCompany ExecutiveOfficer his first class year. He graduated on 7 Jun 1955 and was commissioned in the US Army in the Infantry.

Frank George Walton

Watkinsville - Frank George Walton died on 09/12/2003 at home after a long illness. He was 70 years old having been born in the midst of America's great depression. Walton was a 1955 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.

He retired to Watkinsville in 1993. He served in the United States Army for nearly 30 years and then entered private industry with Butler Aviation International in 1984. Walton's military career included two combat tours in South Vietnam and stationing in South Korea, Germany and Turkey. He commanded soldiers from platoon to Brigade level in the United States and overseas. He organized and activated divisional units at Fort Stewart, Georgia and Hunter Army Airfield in the late 1970's. Walton was a member of the White House staff and assistant to General Maxwell D. Taylor in 1968 and 1969. He completed his military service as an Infantry Colonel at the United States Military Academy as the Director of Military Instruction and member of the Academic Board.

Walton's military decorations were the Silver Star, Bronze Star, three awards of the Legions of Merit and numerous lesser awards. He was a Master Parachutist and held the coveted Combat Infantry Badge. In addition to a Bachelor of Science degree from West Point, Walton earned a Master of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and was a graduate of the Army War College and Command and General Staff College.

Following his military career, Walton managed general aviation service bases for Butler Aviation at Atlantic City, N.J., Boston, Ma and Washington D.C. After retiring to Athens, Georgia in the summer of 1993 Walton was an active member of the Georgia Masters Gardner Association, the Retired Officers Association and the Learning in Retirement. He served as an officer in all these activities. In the winter of 1997, Walton returned to education enrolling at the University of Georgia and pursuing a degree in Political Science. He was also a member of the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy.

Walton is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Ruthann, three children, Anne W. Vance of Duluth, Ga., Colonel Kathleen W. Carr, DMV, PHD of Frederick Maryland; Peter A Walton of Athens and 4 grandchildren and brother Lt. Colonel (ret.) Joseph A. Walton, two nieces and nephew and grandnephew. Funeral services will be held on 09/15/2003 at the Catholic Center at UGA at 11:30am in Athens, Georgia. Interment will be a private service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations go to the UGA Catholic Center or a charity of choice.
