Paul Smor, Musician

Mason Jones, principle horn, Philadelphia Orchestra, called the Valley Forge Military Academy Band Director, Capt. Feltham, in 1951 saying he heard that he had an outstanding French Horn player and he would like to hear him. Feltham arranged an audition though SMOR said he wasn't interested, as he planned to go to WEST POINT.

After the audition, Mason offered Smor a full scholarship to Curtis School of Music including room and board in downtown Phila. Additionally, he guaranteed Paul the first opening in the Orchestra's horn section even if he was still a student. Further, Mason would be his teacher, pro-bono. Paul would have been set for life in the PHILA. ORCH. He turned it all down for The Point and a military career as an Army engineer.

Mason said that Paul was the best young horn player he ever heard next to himself. Mason had joined the Orchestra at 18 as assistant principle and became Principle the next year at age 19. Mason spent 40 years with the Orchestra, excluding 1942-1946, when he was principle horn for the US MARINE BAND.

Paul Smor and I were members of the Valley Forge Military Academy Band and we both graduated in 1951. Norm Schwarzkopf was right behind us, in the class of 1952, but he was not a "bandsman". The VFMA band was manned by young musicians that the Academy recruited from all over the country. We received full scholarships, room, board, and clothing, in exchange for fulfilling our musical duties. With instrumental practice sessions, rehearsals, daily performances of two parades, and a regular schedule of concerts, those took up almost every minute of our time outside of class rooms and mandatory study halls. I played Tuba, and had the fun of playing the orchestral bass parts for many challenging pieces. Paul's instrument was the French Horn. He was a superb musician. Somehow, he got crossed with the Band Director. So, in one of our last concerts, when we came to Marche Slave, he riveted his eyes on the director, closed his music folio, and played the entire score from memory. He and I got very good grades, as was only expected of band members (those scholarships were revokable), and we were the best of friends.

I called Paul a few months ago only to learn that he is suffering from Alzheimer's. His attendant said that he seemed to respond to her mention of my name.

Good Speed, Paul.

I just spoke to a Mr. Marno Goetsch who lived at 348 Oak Hill Drive in Lompoc (Paul's last known address was at 340 Oak Hill Drive in Lompoc) and he said that Paul died about 3 or 4 years ago. I told him about the librarian saying that they didn't have a death announcement for him and that he many not be dead. The man replied that it was his recollection that Paul had died.

I talked with Doris O'Brien today who lived in Lompoc CA until early 2011.

She knew Paul very well, who lived in Lompoc, and I asked her if she knew anything about Paul's status. She said he was very ill when she left Lompoc and that he was probably deceased, although she hadn't had any contact with him after 2011.

Paul Richard Smor '55 #20277

We now believe that Paul died in late 2012 and we're using a guesstimated c15 DEC 2012 as his Date of Death in '55 records.

We've done extensive internet searches and made a lot of phone calls and haven't been able to find an obituary or any official death records, but all of the evidence we've discovered indicates that Paul died in late 2012.

The last '55 contact with Paul was by Charlie Berg in late 2012 when he spoke with Paul's attendant who said that Paul's condition was very poor and he was suffering from Alzheimer's.

Doris O'Brien lived in the same town (Lompoc CA) as Paul until she moved in 2011. She didn't have any contact with Paul after 2011 and said he was very ill when she last saw him.

We have been unable to contact his wife/widow Gwendolyn Francis Smor.

We talked with a former neighbor of his in Lompoc and he said that Paul died a few years ago.

We found an internet report that said Paul Richard Smor died in 2012, and it lists Gwendolyn Francis Smor as his wife and his last known address in Lompoc.

All of the above is documented on Paul's Personal Web Page:

http://www.west-point.org/class/usma1955/PWP/SmorP.htm

If you can verify or add anything to the above. please contact me.
