John Mark Hamilton, Jr.

John Mark Hamilton, Jr. was born on 2 October 1931 in Washington, DC and was appointed to West Point from the 1st Congressional District of Illinois. He entered West Point on 3 July 1951 and was in Company L 1. He graduated on 7 June 1955 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army in the Infantry.

John M. Hamilton Jr.

Army officer and dentist, dies at 82


John M. Hamilton Jr., an Army colonel who became a dentist after retiring from military service, died Nov. 20 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia. He was 82 and a resident of Columbia.

The cause was cardiac arrest, said his daughter, Shereé Rebecca Lucas.

Dr. Hamilton served 23 years in Army infantry units before retiring in 1978. He had tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam.

As a civilian dentist, he practiced dentistry at the East of the River Health Clinic in Washington from 1984 to 1992. He was also chief of the dental department at the J.B. Johnson Nursing Center in the District.

Dr. Hamilton was acting chief dental officer at the D.C. Department of Corrections from 1992 to 1998. He was simultaneously the chief medical officer at the Lorton Correctional Complex from 1992 to 2001. From 2001 to 2011, he was a dentist at Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville, Md.

John Mark Hamilton Jr. was born in Washington and was a 1949 graduate of Dunbar High School. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1955.

After his military service, he graduated from the Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine in New Jersey in 1982. He did postgraduate dental study at Georgetown University.

His wife of 34 years, Dorothy Wilson Hamilton, died in 1994.

Survivors include two children, John Mark Hamilton III and Shereé Rebecca Lucas, both of Columbia
