The Army Mascot

On Sat 22 May this larger-than-life bronze monument of Hannibal, West Point Mule Mascot from 1947-64, was dedicated in Highland Falls.  The statue, with cadet Mule Rider, was "DONATED TO HIGHLAND FALLS IN RECOGNITION OF THEIR GREAT SUPPORT TO WEST POINT AND THE CORPS OF CADETS" (words on the bronze plaque) by Company M-2, Cl of '54.  Steve Townes '75 Mule Rider, now CEO of Keystone Helicopter, the prime speaker, said "for over 100 years the Army Mule has represented West Point as a living symbol of perseverance and strength".  He made reference to ARMY MULE being a powerful "brand name", that it is a "living icon" and also said "an Army Mule can kick a Navy Goat's ass from here to Sunday, any day of the week!"  "THIS MONUMENT HONORS ALL OF THE INTREPID MULE RIDERS SINCE 1899 WHO HAVE PROMOTED THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT OF THE CORPS OF CADETS" (words on the bronze plaque).  The two living Cl '54 Mule Riders, Jan LeCroy and George Perrin, were both speakers at the event.  Many former Mule Riders (oldest Cl '42) were there, as well as the Cadet Mule Riders and the Army Mules Raider, Ranger II, and Gen Scott.

Mayor Joseph D'Onofrio of Highland Falls, pronounced henceforth the 3rd Saturday of May every year will be "HANNIBAL DAY".
