Sir, there are thirteen and a butt months remaining before the 45th Reunion of the Class of 1964!
Mark your calendars and start making plans. We'll be gathering at West Point from 10-13 September 2009 to celebrate our 45th. We already have reserved rooms at the Thayer and the Fort Montgomery Holiday Inn and will follow a schedule similar to what we did during our 40th Reunion. As a result of the hotel telephone issues we had five years ago, your reunion staff is working on a fairer methodology for 2009. We will announce this system in a few weeks. In the meantime do not call the Thayer or Holiday Inn.
Although the official days of the reunion are Thursday through Sunday, many Classmates are planning to arrive as early as Monday, the 7th (Labor Day). Why not come early and take advantage of the sights of West Point and the Mid-Hudson Valley? Our golfers are already making plans to play at a number of challenging courses near West Point. We'll be providing more information on touring, golfing, etc. over the next few months.
We hope to exceed our turnout from 2004. I ask all of you to take a few moments and search out for lost Classmates. Make it a point to look through the Ward Book and find an old roommate/friend who you have not seen or who has not attended a recent reunion. Invite him back to West Point. We have too many Classmates who have lost touch with us over the years. I am always touched by the dozen or so Classmates who show up, having been away from West Point for 20, 30 or 40 years. Once a Classmate comes back, gets reacquainted with the camaraderie of our Class and experiences the magic of West Point they are changed forever. Personally, I will remember always Phil "Skeet" Sleet who returned to West Point in 2004 after many, many years. Marty Michlik and I spent hours during the summer of '04 trying to convince Skeet to come. He came, and the experience recharged him and so many of us who came in contact with him. Sadly, shortly after he returned home, he passed away.
We also want to invite our ex-Classmates, many of whom are quite active supporters of our Class. Finally our widows; let us never forget them.
We have sent out a letter with this same information and enclosed a postcard. With it, we request that you update/correct your mailing address, phone number(s) and e-mail address(es), if different from the address on the envelope or what is shown in the Ward Book. While we will do most of our communicating via e-mail and our Web Site, we realize that some of you are still "pen and ink" folks. If you require written USPS information we ask that you indicate that fact on the postcard and insure that we have your correct address. Please drop the postcard in the mail NLT 23 August. If we do not hear from you we will assume that your AOG listed address and your information in the Ward Book is accurate. We hope to have a solid e-mail roster in place by mid-September. Bottom line - tell us how you want us to communicate with you for next year's reunion.
Once we get this e-mail list set up you will start receiving information about hotel rooms, events, etc.
As we move on in years, it becomes ever more important that your Class Committee knows how to reach you for reasons that go way beyond our reunion. So, please take this request seriously.
Your Reunion Committee looks forward to seeing you in September '09.
Warm regards,
Dan Evans
Class Chairman
Note: There will be a football game the weekend of our reunion. The opponent is Duke.
