Physical Aptitude Examination

All candidates for admission to the United States Military Academy are required to take and pass a physical aptitude examination (PAE). The examination consists of five events including (i) pull-ups (men)/ flexed arm hang (women), (ii) push-ups, (iii) standing long jump, (iv) modified basketball throw from a kneeling position, and (v) a 300 yard shuttle run. The examination is given at West Point for those attending the Invitational Academic Workshop in June each year. All others can take the examination by completing mail the out PAEs with high school officials or by making arrangements with Houston area Military Academy Liaison Officers (MALOs).

Preparation and Dress
The entire examination will take place indoors in a gymnasium. Candidates should dress in a shirt and shorts suitable for athletic activity and wear good rubber soled basketball type athletic shoes. Waffle-soled shoes usually hinder a candidate’s performance. Candidates will be graded on a total score for this examination. Therefore you obtain credit for doing your best on every event.

Pull-Ups (Men)/ Flexed-Arm Hang (Women)
These events are performed using one horizontal bar 1 ¼" in diameter at least 8 feet from the floor. The bar is fixed at both ends and does not float or twist.

For men the pull-up event is started by jumping up to grasp the bar with the back of your hands toward your face and thumbs under the bar. It is started with a momentary pause in a straight arm hang with elbows locked. At the command of "Go" a candidate pulls upward until his chin is lifted over the bar without tilting your head backward. Return to a straight arm hang with elbows licked and repeat as many time as possible. Feet must not touch the floor and the body must be held approximately straight. If a person kicks his way up the pull up will not be counted and no resting is allowed between pull-ups.

For women the flexed arm hang is started by climbing a ladder or other support to grasps the bar with hands shoulder width apart and backs of hands toward her face with thumbs under the bar. On the command "Go" step off the ladder or support holding your chin level and above the bar. A stop watch is started on "Go" and stopped when (i) her chin rests on the bar, (ii) head tilts backward to keep her chin above the bar, or (iii) her chin falls below the level of the bar.

The mean scores for candidates from a recent class were 8.8 rep for men and 6’2" for women.

Standing Long Jump
The standing long jump is performed on an area marked off with a take off line and markers every two inches on the gymnasium floor. With feet aligned place your toes immediately behind the take off line and jump forward as far as you can. You may swing your arms and bend your knees, but do not take a preliminary hop in preparation for the jump. Take off with both feet and land on both feet simultaneously. A foul will be called if you fall backward after jumping.

Candidates can take one practice jump and be scored on three correctly executed jumps. The longest correctly executed jump will be the candidates score. The mean scores for candidates from a recent class were 7’10" for men and 6’2" for women.

Modified Basketball Throw
The modified basketball throw uses a gymnasium mat at a throwing line and a measurement line marked on floor for one foot measurements extending a minimum of 90 feet with a ceiling height of at least 22 feet.

The test begins with a candidate taking a throwing position on both knees on the mat close to and directly behind the throwing line. Knees must remain parallel to the throwing line for all throws. Knees cannot slide on, or leave, the mat during the throw. Three correct overhand throws (not underhand or sidearm) will be recorded from this kneeling position to attain as great a distance as possible. The non-throwing hand may be used to steady the ball in preparation for the throw but the candidate may not touch the floor or mat with either hand during or after any throw. All throws are measured to the center of impact in increment of one foot to the line or beyond which the basketball passed. A ball landing to one side of the scale will be measured by an imaginary straight line parallel to the throwing line and extending from the point of impact to the scale and not the actual distance of the throw. Any ball that hits the ceiling or a sidewall, or is not correctly thrown will not be scored and will be re-thrown.

Candidates will have one practice throw and three correctly executed throws for record. The best of the record throws determines a candidates score. The mean scores for candidates from a recent class were 67 feet for men and 39 feet for women.

300 Yard Shuttle Run
The shuttle run course is set up on the gymnasium floor with a minimum or two lanes at a length of 25 yards.

Candidates can use a sprint, crouch or stand up start position with both feet behind the start line, which also will be the finish line. Candidates run six complete round trips for a total of 300 yards. Candidates must place at least one foot on or over the line at each turn. On the final lap candidates sprint past the finish line. If a candidate falls or is hindered by another candidate in an adjoining land, he or she will be stopped and allowed to start again after a sufficient period of rest. A candidate’s score will be recorded to a tenth of a second. The mean scores for candidates from a recent class were 60.0 seconds for men and 69.1 seconds for women.
