25 March 2011

Rex Storch Award

Alyssa Trann

This award is presented to the most valuable swimmer or diver on the women's team.  Our top scoring woman at Patriots, Alyssa was consistent throughout the season.  She currently holds the Academy record in the 50 Free and was a member of the 200 Free relay record breaking team.

Most Valuable Male

Christopher Nguyen

Placing 2nd on 3-meter and 1st on 1-meter at Patriots, this honor is well deserved.  Chris not only won 1-meter with a 398.35, he set new Academy records on both boards, broke the Patriot League record on 1-meter and was named Patriot League Diver of the Meet.  He advanced to the NCAA Zone A Regionals where he finished 14th on 1-meter and 17th on 3-meter.  Chris was consistently a top performer throughout the season.

Most Valuable Female Plebe

Lara Stouffer

Currently 7th and 9th in the 100 and 200 Back, respectively, on the All-Time Top 10 list, Lara has proved to be a huge asset.  She has an excellent work ethic in and out of the water and brings a consistently upbeat attitude to the team.

Dorothy "Skippie" Buncher Award

Brock Redondo

This award is presented to the plebe on the men's team that contributes the most to the varsity program.  Brock was our leading point scorer by a landslide at Patriots as well as ECACs.  At Patriots he finished 4th in the 400 IM with a new Academy record, 6th in the 500 Free and 5th in the 1650 Free.  The following weekend he won the 400 IM at ECACs, was 2nd in the 500 Free and 3rd in the 1650 Free.

Most Improved Female

Julianna Lynch

One of our most consistent performers in the ppool and classroom, Julianna improved from 2:09.3 TO 2:05.7 in the 200 back and from 1:00.1 to a 59.3 in the 100 Back. She is now the second fastest Black Knight ever in the 200 Back and 8th best in the 100.

Steven Childers Award

Ayman Andrews

This award is presented to a sophomore or junior member of the men's team who shows the most improvement in competitive swimming throughout the season.  At the beginning of the season Ayman knew there was one thing that he wanted to do.  He wanted to win the 100 Fly at Patriots, and that is exactly what he did.  He improved from a 49.16 at Navy to a 48.70 to become the conference champion.  He also dropped more than three seconds in the 200 Fly, improving from a 1:52.59 at Navy to a 1:49.17 to finish 4th at Patriots.

Iron Knights

Kathleen Woodhams and Daniel Foky

This award is presented to the top performers in the weight room (as selected by our strength coach) from both the men's and the women's team.  Both Katie and Daniel displayed consistency throughout the year and went out of their way to help underclassmen improve.

Most Inspirational Female

Cortney Heaps

After undergoing back surgery last year, Cortney committed herself to getting back in the water.  She got herself back in shape and came back to the team in August.  She was not only able to participate, she was able to contribute to the team on and off of the pool deck.

Most Inspirational Male

Matthew Leegan

Leader of the B-Unit (breaststroke group) this year, Matt was a rock of consistency for our team in and out of the pool. He could often be heard shouting "Big day" around the pool deck to help motivate his teammates.  He constantly challenged his teammates in practice and inspired them with his gutsy racing strategy in meets.

Joe & Anna B. Stetz Award

Kathleen Woodhams

This award is presented to a member of the women's team who has shown outstanding leadership and dedication to the team over a four-year period.  Katie started her Army Diving career as a walk-on her plebe year.  She put in the work and steadily improved throughout her four years, culminating in two top-8 finishes at Patriots.  Katie sets an excellent example for the underclassmen to follow in and out of the pool.  She cared deeply about her team and always did everything she could to help them succeed.

Class of 1923 Award

Matthew Leegan

This award is presented to the graduating senior on the men's team who has exhibited qualities of leadership and sportsmanship, and who has shown outstanding ability as a competitive swimmer.  Through sweat, blood and tears Matt earned every second he dropped during his time here at Army.  He improved steadily every year, and by his Firstie year could be counted on as a rock of consistency.  As a team captain this year, he led the team to great success.  He instilled in them a sense of tradition and an ability to come together as a team when it mattered most.

LTG John Daley Award

Corrine Payne and Kathleen Woodhams

Presented to the captain of the women's swimming and diving team.  Corri excelled in the water and leaves the team with three Academy records (200 Free, 400 Free relay, 800 Free relay).  Katie improved continuously throughout her diving career culminating with a 4th place finish on 1-meter and a 6th place finish on 3-meter at Patriots.  Both provided outstanding leadership to the team.

Michael Kilroy Award

Matthew Leegan and Christopher Rojewski

Presented to the captain of the men's swimming and diving team.  Matt ended his career with a 3rd place finish in the 100 Breast and a 9th place finish in the 200 Breast at Patriots.  Chris had 2 top-8 finishes at Patriots, he was 6th on 1-meter and 8th on 3-meter.  Throughout their time on the team, both of these young men have been invaluable and they will be missed.
