After 7+ hours in a van full of cramped riders, the Army cycling team had a terrific weekend in Erie, PA. With weather that could only be described as the antithesis of West Point- warm and sunny with a cool breeze- Army enjoyed a lot of success in this noticeably smaller field. Since half of the conference travelled up to UVM in Vermont this weekend, the races this weekend might have been smaller, but they were no less challenging. With the weather finally warm enough (and close enough to a large body of water) to attract Navy off of its indoor trainers, the weekend had its share of healthy competition.
Many Army riders placed high as they battled for every last stretch of pavement. Some even ate some pavement, apparently not getting enough to eat at the continental breakfast that everyone else took advantage of at the hotel. Steve Pingree showing true cycling spirit took a fall in the Crit race and yet bounce right back up for a respectable finish.
It was a long weekend. A lot of fun, but there will definitely be a lot of happy riders next weekend when they do not have to spend half of the day in a van. Come out and support Army next weekend as they compete on their home turf!
